A tribute to Baba Amte

Baba Amte was a messiah to hundreds of leprosy patients and adivasis and disabled from society. The great social worker started a number of social welfare projects for them at Anandvan and Hemalkasa, which have been carried forward by Dr. Mandakini and Dr. Prakash Amte with the help of many associates and the third generation of Amte family that includes Dr. Dr. Archana and Dr.Digant Amte.

On the first death anniversary of Baba Amte, Atre Katta paid a hearty tribute to his memory by organising a special programme where Sampada Wagle, founder of the Katta narrated her views about Amte's work . She said, "Recently Vilas Thuse and Vidya Padwal led a group of 15 members of Atre Katta to visit Amte's projects at Varora and Hemalkasa. We were spellbound by the transformation of the barren land into a self-sufficient lush green township at Anandvan.

Wagle added, "The greatest contribution of Baba Amte is that with his own example, he changed the layman's attitude towards people affected with leprosy and initiated people to accept them in society. In all Amte projects, cured leprosy patients work with normal people and also cook and serve in the community kitchen. Blind and other disabled get work according to their capacity. They knit carpets, make greetings, work in the fields and try to stand on their own."

The group also visited Hemalkasa where the Amte family has started a medical centre, school and also orphanage for wild animals. "We witnessed a medical camp for which many adivasis had come from remote places from the forest. All of them were treated and fed without charging anything. Though Baba Amte and Dr. Prakash Amte's work has been globally recognised, I believe that the heartfelt gratitude they get from numerous unprivileged people is greater," concluded Wagle.

Shriram Nanivadekar, who runs Anandvan Shehi mandal in Thane, also shared some of his memories about Baba. A PowerPoint presentation showcased the huge projects that are doing successfully.
